I bought this unit about 8 months ago. His started up fine and mine had troubles (maybe because his was oil-free and this one uses oil, but still. When I was shopping I looked at this one and the Makita MAC2400 13 Amp 2-1/2 Horsepower 4.2-Gallon Oiled Twin Hot Dog Compressor. However, after working with it a bit, I am disappointed with this unit. The Makita's probably a lot quieter than this unit, among other things. I agree with the design criticisms in the "Good compressor, poor design" review by "Crusty." Also, consistent with the "Hard to start" review by "Wilton W. At the time, I had heard good things about this compressor. ) The weather was cold but not too extreme so it was definitely working weather; I had not expected so many problems in the cold.
Wyman", I have had trouble starting this compressor in cold weather. I was working with a guy that had a Porter Cable pancake compressor and we were both working with and storing our compressors in the same cold, unheated location. I got this one to save $45 (big mistake). When this one quits, I'll get the Makita.
This compressor does the basics well - compress air. The pressure gauge is behind the carry handle so vision is obstructed.3. The issues that I have are in the design of the unit.1. The bleed valve location is on the back of the unit next to the compressor motor, which makes it hard to access and there's burn potential for hands.2. The output pressure control valve is tight behind the carry handle.4. The hose connection faces the compressor motor rather than the front. It does the basics without complaint.
This compressor kicks out the overload on cold start ups. With an ambient temperature of 70 degrees and above I don't expect difficulties with start up, but I have to re-set the overload 5 to 6 times with the tanks empty. I had this identical compressor before (it was stolen) and I never had a problem with start-up unless it was below freezing. I am quite disapointed with this item.
This is a great little compressor for the money. I didn't need a real high volume unit, as I only plan to fill tires & blow dust out of my electronic devices - I have 19 pooches and there's a lot of dust "in these-here parts". The compressor has performed flawlessly. I'm pleased.
When attempting to initiate set up procedure, the owners manual was unclear and necessitated a call to a DeWalt service center. I returned the DeWalt compresssor because I believe it had been used, probably briefly, returned and reshipped to me. It arrived with considerable oil in the bottom of the carton. There was a considerable amount of oil in the crankcase, and an ounce (approx) of rusty water drained from the tanks when valves were opened; the service center rep advised that this should not have been the case. Additionally, pressure control valve is difficult to adjust because of location under the handle.
